The Charm of Old St. Pete: 5 Historic Neighborhoods You’ll Love

St. Petersburg is known for its sunshine, waterfront parks, arts and creative energy but, what truly sets our city apart is its rich architectural history and each neighborhoods individual charm. From brick and palm tree lined streets, hex block sidewalks and century-old bungalows to stately homes with timeless details, these historic districts each tell a story of St. Pete’s past while offering a vibrant lifestyle today.

Here are five of our favorite historic neighborhoods that capture the heart of old St. Pete:

Historic Old Northeast

Surprise, surprise…often called the crown jewel of St. Pete, Old Northeast is where the city’s story began. Think brick streets, grand oak, jacarandas, banyan trees making a shaded canopy, and VERY historic homes with character around every corner. No two homes look the same and you can find a large front porch on most of the homes in the neighborhood. There are so many things to love about the neighborhood. To name a few residents love being steps from the waterfront parks that lead to downtown, making it one of the most walkable areas in the city. You’ll find neighbors chatting on porches, kids biking to the picturesque palm tree lined Coffee Pot Bayou (where you may even meet a sea cow aka manatee), This neighborhood has a strong sense of community that feels timeless.

Allendale Terrace

My personal dream neighborhood! I love the winding streets and the unique architecture of the homes. Known for its elevated lots, (yes this means non-flood zone, a rarity in Florida) and quiet tree-canopied streets, Allendale offers a mix of Tudor-style and Craftsman homes with incredible architectural detail. Its large lots and brick streets create an old-world charm, while the convenient location, just minutes from downtown, gives residents the best of both worlds. It’s a neighborhood that feels tucked away but close to everything. I can’t get enough of the winding streets and the mix of old-Florida charm with storybook architecture. Allendale is one of those spots that feels special the moment you turn down a brick-lined street.

Historic Roser Park

Like many I stumbled upon Roser Park one day and thought WHERE AM I? It might just be St. Pete’s best-kept secret. Nestled along Booker Creek, this neighborhood is filled with early-1900s architecture, winding brick roads, sloped lots and terraced landscapes that make it the most unique terrain unlike anywhere else in the city. It’s rich in character, artsy, and peaceful, with a growing number of restored homes bringing fresh life to this truly historic district. Fun fact: it is one of the first areas around St Pete to be officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A stone throw from John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, and Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital.

Greater Woodlawn

I may be biased since this is my neighborhood. A true sense of community in Greater Woodlawn and very active optional neighborhood association that hosts events for those who live there. Blending bungalow charm with a family-friendly feel, Greater Woodlawn sits just north of downtown and has become a favorite for those who want character without the price tag of Old Northeast. You’ll find cozy bungalows, cheerful front porches, and a strong sense of community pride. Its central location means you’re close to coffee shops, parks, and all that vibrant downtown energy. It has many walkable restaurants, ice cream shops, coffee shops, a neighborhood brewery and even a natural organic grocery store.

Crescent Lake

Centered around one of the city’s most beloved parks, Crescent Lake is equal parts historic and lively. The lake is serene, beautiful and during parts of the year you can watch the white pelicans that visit. Crescent Lake offers playgrounds, active lifestyles, 6 pickle ball courts, 2 tennis courts and an iconic water tower and large fields for your pup or mom meet up groups, The tree-lined streets are filled with 1920s and 1930s homes, and weekends often mean joggers around the lake, dog walks under the banyans, and impromptu playdates at the playground. With easy access to both 4th Street dining and downtown, it’s one of St. Pete’s most balanced neighborhoods for everyday living.

There are so many more historic neighborhoods I adore…this list could have easily been twice as long. If you enjoyed this glimpse into St. Pete’s charm, I’d love to send you more! Tell me what makes you feel most at home, and I’ll share neighborhoods that match your lifestyle.

At JL at Home Collection, we love helping clients find a home, one that blends history, community, and that unmistakable St. Pete charm. Whether you’re drawn to the grand architecture of Old Northeast or the bungalows of Greater Woodlawn, there’s a historic pocket of this city waiting to welcome you home.
